Ricky Ziehl

Artist Statement

Working across mixed media on Fabriano paper, Ricky's practice explores themes of identity, emotion, vulnerability, and human presence through figurative and symbolic imagery. Combining pen, acrylic, watercolour, pencil, ink, and pointillism, he is drawn to the balance between precision and softness — creating works that feel both intimate and expressive.

His subject matter moves between the human figure, portraiture, and symbolic forms inspired by nature, culture, and personal observation. Recurring elements examine strength and fragility, anonymity, connection, introspection, and the emotional language carried through posture, texture, and gesture.

The repetitive process of mark-making plays an important role in his practice, particularly through detailed pen work and pointillism, where individual marks collectively form atmosphere, depth, and movement. He is interested in creating pieces that invite quiet reflection while allowing viewers space to form their own emotional interpretations and connections to the work.

Biography

Born in the small Free State town of Fauresmith, Ricky developed an early fascination with storytelling, texture, and visual expression through the stark landscapes and quiet isolation of rural South Africa. He later studied Graphic Design in Bloemfontein, where he refined his eye for composition, symbolism, and emotional narrative — elements that continue to shape his artistic practice today.

After spending 18 years living in London, working across creative and entrepreneurial industries, Ricky returned to Cape Town in 2026 to pursue art full time. Drawn by the city's raw natural beauty, ocean landscapes, and vibrant creative culture, his work began evolving into deeply personal explorations of identity, intimacy, masculinity, memory, and transformation.

Working primarily with watercolour, ink, and mixed media, Ricky often deconstructs and reconstructs the human form, weaving together themes of vulnerability and connection. His pieces balance softness with fragmentation — reflecting both emotional exposure and resilience.
